This School Counseling Week, we recognize the vital role school counselors play in supporting students’ academic achievement, social-emotional development, and postsecondary planning. Their work—counseling, coordination, and advocacy—drives student success and strengthens our school communities.

This month we celebrate the rich history, achievements, and living legacies of Black leaders, students, staff, and community members across our district. From classroom projects and student spotlights to community events and resource shares, we’re committed to learning, listening, and honoring voices that shaped our past and are shaping our future.

This week, 900 students from across the Commonwealth traveled to Richmond to share the story of agricultural education and FFA with our state leaders, and KWHS FFA was proud to participate!
Our FFA representative met with legislators to advocate for FFA and agricultural education within our public schools We were even able to hear a special message of support from Governor Spanberger! One of our SODA mentors ran into her student at a high school basketball game, and the smiles said it all! They were so happy to see each other, a perfect example of how SODA mentors are looked up to by the younger students they guide. SODA’s mission is about building character, connection, and life skills, which help create meaningful relationships and moments like this.

In Dr. Yates’ Dual Enrollment Psychology class, students explored psychological disorders through research and presentations that highlighted both the science and the human experience behind mental health.
As students shared what they learned, they examined how biological, psychological, and environmental factors shape mental health, while also considering treatment approaches and long-term outcomes. This work encouraged empathy, critical thinking, and clear communication, helping students better understand mental health challenges and thoughtfully engage with complex psychological topics in a college-level setting.

🎄✨ KWHS Agricultural Science Department and FFA spent the week learning and giving back! Our horticulture class visited Mr. Garner’s Woodbury Pines Christmas Tree Farm to learn the science of Christmas tree production, then practiced hands-on wreath-making using a generous greenery donation from Tommy’s Produce.
Meanwhile, Intro to Plant Systems students joined KWHS’s 100 Acts of Kindness initiative and made beautiful holiday wreaths for our hardworking custodial staff. Students shared gratitude and learned how much our custodians do each day — a heartwarming way to say “thank you.” 💚🙌

🎨👻 Our students recreated the French Surrealist game Exquisite Corpse using cardboard: groups of three each designed a different section of a monster, then joined their parts to form wonderfully bizarre creatures. The monsters were displayed around the school, delighting and occasionally startling passersby with jump‑scares and big laughs.
